Banana Oat Toddler Cookies
A soft, barely sweet cookie for my toddler, closer to a little oat bar than a crunchy cookie. Banana and applesauce do the sweetening, and the flax and chia thicken the applesauce so the cookies hold together and come out a bit denser, which is good for small hands.
It bends to whatever is in the kitchen. Got three ripe bananas? Tap 3x and everything scales with them. No chia, no flax, or no banana at all? The swaps are under Substitutions.

Recipe originally written in US cups. These are the original measures.
Ingredients
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Fork for mashing
- Cookie scoop or spoon
- Baking sheet lined with parchment
Method
- Heat the oven. Heat the oven and line a baking sheet with parchment. Oven: 350°F / 180°C (160°C fan)
- Mix. Mash the banana in a bowl, then mix in the applesauce and egg. Stir in the oats, flax, chia and cinnamon.
- Rest. Leave it 10 minutes so the chia and flax soak up the extra moisture and thicken it.
- Scoop and bake. Scoop onto the baking sheet and bake 14 to 16 minutes.
Baker's notes
Not counted yet: the number of cookies depends on your scoop, so the 12 here is a guess until the first batch.
Substitutions
No banana: leave it out and use ⅔ cup applesauce, with everything else the same. They come out barely sweet, closer to a breakfast bite than a cookie. More bananas: scale the whole recipe by your bananas (3 bananas, tap 3x), so each banana keeps its applesauce, egg and oats. No chia, or no flax (untested suggestion): use 2 tablespoons of whichever one you have, or replace each missing tablespoon with 2 tablespoons of extra oats so the dough still holds together. No chia and no flax (untested suggestion): add 2 to 3 tablespoons extra oats; the 10 minute rest matters less. Expect a softer, more cakey cookie.
